David Philip Hefti [1975 *] Klangscherben mosaic for violoncello solo

Klangscherben (Shards of Sound) – Mosaic for Solo Cello was written in early 2011 to a commission from Thomas Grossenbacher, to whom it is also dedicated. It was composed shortly after I finished my Cello Concerto Gegenklang ('Counter-sound') that was first performed by Thomas Grossenbacher. Whole passages were torn out of their context in Gegenklang and formed anew – made, as it were, into shards and then stuck together again. These combinations result in a colourful mosaic, which allows the original motives to appear in a new light. The structural references, the tempo relations and the relations between motives unite the individual mosaic pieces into a multi-facetted picture. D. P. H.
