Ritus - 4 dance collages for violoncello solo was composed in 2007 to a commission from the cellist Thomas Grossenbacher, to whom the piece is dedicated. Ritus was awarded special prize of the jury at the International Gian Battista Viotti Composition Competition in 2007.
Ritus is based on Swiss folk songs and on different dance forms, though these provide a structure that is on the whole inaudible. Contemporary and Mediterranean influences such as techno and tarantella are crossed with historical forms such as the waltz, the mazurka, the 'Scottish' (an Alpine dance, despite its name), the polka and the 'lied' form. This all results in a colourful collage. Even a devilish march has managed to worm its way in. The work's four contrasting movements - 1: Ecstasy; 2: Hovering; 3: Power(lessness); 4: Whirling Dervishes - describe different states of mind, and make use of the most varied playing techniques. The palette of expressive possibilities employed ranges from a warm cello tone, via various knocking signals (with and without a definite pitch), to pure noise.
